With the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in England and Wales looming on the horizon, the interest and excitement are on the rise as to which 15 players from Bangladesh are going to represent the country in what is considered as the second most prestigious 50-over cricket tournament in the world, just behind the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Bangladesh will also play a tri-nation series in Ireland, involving the hosts and New Zealand, prior to the commencement of the Champions Trophy. So technically, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will announce a squad that is going to play both in the tri-series and then in the Champions Trophy.
Bangladesh will leave for England on April 26, as they will hold a 10-day conditioning camp in Sussex’s homeground Hove to prepare ahead of the high-profile series’. Before that, the BCB selectors will announce the Bangladesh squad on April 19.
Words are doing the round that though the eventual Bangladesh squad will consist only 15 players, the Bangladesh team management are off the view to travel with more players to England for the conditioning camp, and then in Ireland for the tri-nation series.
According to the chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu, considering the seam-friendly conditions in Ireland and England, the Bangladesh team management are focusing more on fast bowlers, while they also want to take some experienced batsmen with the main contignent.
In that case, pacers like Mohammad Saifuddin, Shafiul Islam and Kamrul Islam could travel to England with the team on April 26. And as far as the “experienced batsman” is concerned, things get a bit tricky as to what exactly did the chief selector had meant by it. But by the outer look of it, it seems that Shahriar Nafees is finally going to get a nod from the selectors, even if he doesn’t feature in the final squad.
But the possibility of Nasir Hossain’s inclusion is still hanging in the air, as many within the country’s cricket fraternity believe that the conflict between the all-rounder and the head coach Chandika Hathurusingha may keep him out of the team yet another time. The last time Nasir donned the national colors was way back in October last year, during the series against England.
